About Panchang

What is Panchang?

Panchang is the Vedic almanac. The name means five limbstithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), nakshatra (lunar mansion), yoga, and karana. Together they describe the quality of a day. They are calculated from the exact positions of the Sun and Moon at your local sunrise, so the values differ by city and by date.

What is Rahu Kaal and how is it calculated?

Rahu Kaal is an inauspicious period each day, best avoided for starting important work. The daytime (local sunrise to sunset) is divided into eight equal parts, and one part is Rahu Kaal — a different part for each weekday. Because it is tied to local sunrise and sunset, its exact clock time shifts by city and season. Gulika Kaal and Yamaganda are two other inauspicious parts, found the same way.

What is Abhijit Muhurat?

Abhijit Muhurat is a short auspicious window around local midday — the eighth of the fifteen daytime muhurtas. It is considered favourable for most new beginnings when a better muhurta is unavailable. Like all these periods it is calculated from local sunrise and sunset, so its time changes by location.

What does "till" mean next to the tithi and nakshatra?

A tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana each end at a precise moment when the Moon (or Sun–Moon angle) crosses into the next segment. The till time is when the current one ends and the next begins. A (+1d) marker means it ends after midnight, on the following day.

Can I check the Panchang for a future date or another city?

Yes — use the date picker to check any past or future date, and change the location by typing a city name or clicking My location to auto-detect. The tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, sunrise, sunset and every period are recalculated for each city and date combination.
