Understanding the Saturn Transit (Shani Gochar)

Saturn (Shani) is the slowest of the visible planets, spending about two and a half years in each sign. Because it moves so slowly, its change of sign — its gochar — is one of the most watched events in Vedic astrology, shaping a long chapter rather than a passing mood. Saturn's transit is read mainly from your natal Moon: which house of yours it is passing through.

Sade Sati, Ashtama Shani, and the kinder houses

Saturn over the 12th, 1st and 2nd from your Moon is the famous Sade Sati — roughly seven and a half years of consolidation and testing. Saturn in the 8th is Ashtama Shani. By contrast, Saturn in the 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon is traditionally supportive — effort and patience pay off.

A trend, not a forecast

This tool gives the traditional gochar trend for where the transit falls — a description of themes and emphasis. It does not predict fixed events. How a transit actually plays out depends on your whole chart, your dasha and the other transits together, which is what a full reading weighs.

Positions computed with a full astronomical model of Saturn and the Lahiri ayanamsha. For cultural guidance and self-reflection — not a forecast of events.

How the Transit Is Calculated
1
Saturn's position over time. We compute Saturn's sidereal longitude across a wide window and detect each moment it crosses a sign boundary — including the brief reversals when Saturn is retrograde.
2
Your Moon sign. From your birth date, time and place we find your natal Moon sign. The transit's house is simply Saturn's sign counted from your Moon.
3
The trend. The house from the Moon selects the traditional gochar theme — Sade Sati, Ashtama Shani, or a supportive placement — shown concisely for the current, previous and next transit.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Saturn transit (Shani Gochar)?
A transit is where Saturn is in the sky now, not where it was at your birth. Saturn spends about two and a half years per sign, so its sign change is a major, long event. Its effect is read from your natal Moon — the house Saturn is passing through.
What do current, previous and next mean?
Current is the sign Saturn is in today; previous is the sign it just left; next is the one it moves into. Each shows the entry and exit dates, with Saturn's retrograde noted where it applies.
What is Sade Sati and Ashtama Shani?
Sade Sati is Saturn transiting the 12th, 1st and 2nd from your Moon — about 7.5 years. Ashtama Shani is Saturn in the 8th from the Moon. Saturn in the 3rd, 6th and 11th is considered supportive.
Does it predict specific events?
No. It gives the traditional gochar trend for the transit's house from your Moon — themes and emphasis, not fixed events. The way it unfolds depends on your whole chart, dasha and other transits, which a full reading weighs together.
Does it need my exact birth time?
The transit dates are the same for everyone. Your birth details are used only to find your Moon sign, which sets the house. A rough time is usually enough, since the Moon stays in a sign for over two days.
