Indian numerology rests on two numbers drawn from your date of birth: the Mulank and the Bhagyank. One describes the temperament you were born with; the other describes the direction your life tends to move in. Learn to read the pair together and you have the backbone of a Vedic numerology reading — who you are, and where you are going.
What Is the Mulank?
The Mulank — also written Moolank, and known as the root, radical, or driver number — comes from the day of the month you were born, reduced to a single digit between 1 and 9.
Example: born on the 23rd → 2 + 3 = Mulank 5. Born on the 8th → Mulank 8. Born on the 29th → 2 + 9 = 11 → 1 + 1 = Mulank 2.
Because it is fixed by a single number — your birth day — the Mulank is treated as your most immediate, instinctive signature: how you meet ordinary life, your reflexes, your default temperament. It is the number said to be strongest in the first part of life and in day-to-day behaviour.
What Is the Bhagyank?
The Bhagyank — the destiny or fate number — is built from your entire date of birth: day, month, and year, summed and reduced to a single digit.
Example: born 23 November 1990. Reduce each part first — day 23 → 5, month 11 → 2, year 1990 → 19 → 10 → 1 — then add: 5 + 2 + 1 = 8. Bhagyank 8.
Master numbers. In the Indian system followed by Cheiro and Sethuraman, only 11 and 22 are preserved as master numbers if they appear at the final step; 33 is reduced to 6. This differs from some modern Western numerology, which also keeps 33.
Where the Mulank is instinct, the Bhagyank is trajectory. It is associated with the circumstances your life gravitates toward, the opportunities and lessons that keep recurring, and the theme that becomes clearer as you get older. If this calculation sounds familiar, it should: the Bhagyank is the same figure that Western numerology calls the Life Path number, and the Mulank corresponds to the Western Birth Day number.
The Planet Behind Each Number
What makes Indian numerology distinct is that every number from 1 to 9 is tied to a planet, and the planet colours the number's meaning. This ruling-planet scheme was popularised by the numerologist Cheiro and adapted in India by Sethuraman:
- 1 — Sun: leadership, independence, originality. A natural authority who forges their own path.
- 2 — Moon: sensitivity, intuition, cooperation. Emotionally attuned and diplomatic; works best in partnership.
- 3 — Jupiter: wisdom, optimism, expansion. A teacher and communicator drawn to knowledge and growth.
- 4 — Rahu: unconventional, hard-working, restless. Builds against the grain — steady effort and sudden turns.
- 5 — Mercury: quick, adaptable, communicative. A restless intellect, natural at business and trade.
- 6 — Venus: love, beauty, comfort. Draws harmony and material ease; values a balanced life.
- 7 — Ketu: introspective, spiritual, analytical. A seeker who values depth over surface.
- 8 — Saturn: discipline, endurance, karma. Success tends to come later but lasts.
- 9 — Mars: energy, courage, drive. Bold, competitive, action-oriented.
(In Cheiro's original European scheme, 4 was linked to Uranus and 7 to Neptune; the Indian tradition assigns these to the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu, which is the convention used here.) This is why an 8 is associated with delayed-but-durable achievement — Saturn rewards patience — while a 6, ruled by Venus, is linked to relationships and comfort.
Reading the Mulank and Bhagyank Together
The real insight comes from how your two numbers relate. There are two broad cases.
When they match
If your Mulank and Bhagyank are the same number, you carry a single, concentrated signature. Your instinctive nature and your life's direction point the same way, so life tends to feel congruent and your drive is unusually focused. The risk is one-sidedness — the same strengths, and the same blind spots, are effectively doubled.
When they differ
More commonly the two differ, and that gap is where the growth lives. You are wired one way (Mulank) while life keeps steering you another (Bhagyank). A Mulank 1 with a Bhagyank 6, for instance, is an independent, self-directed person whose destiny keeps pulling them toward responsibility for others. Neither number is "right"; the task is to lean on your Mulank's instinct while honouring where your Bhagyank is taking you. Handled well, the tension becomes range rather than conflict.
A note on compatibility claims. Some popular numerology assigns fixed "friendly" and "enemy" numbers and makes firm predictions from them. Treat those confidently-stated rules with caution — the durable value of Mulank and Bhagyank is as a language for temperament and direction, not a system for forecasting specific events.
Where These Numbers Fit
Mulank and Bhagyank are the foundation, but they are not the whole of a reading.
